A large and enthusiastic audience enjoyed an evening focused primarily on Northern Ballet Theatre's production of The Three Musketeers, arriving at Sadlers Wells in early June. David Nixon, NBT's artistic director, spoke about how he first encountered the scenario, by David Drew, and both men explained the evolution of this into the present full length ballet. The scenario had originally been prepared for the Royal Opera House stage, so some adaptation was necessary, and David Nixon outlined the subtle changes made in order to accommodate stages around the
UK
, and a smaller company.
Both men spoke in some detail about Sir Malcolm Arnold's score, and about the important contribution of both Anthony Meredith,
Arnold'
s biographer, and John Longstaff, the arranger, to the musical composition. It was with great sadness that David Nixon talked about Sir Malcolm's death on premiere night.
The first performances around the country have gone very well with enthusiastic audiences and the company love it.
David Drew also spoke about his other scenario and choreographic work, and stressed his concern at the lack of new narrative ballet.
David Nixon also spoke about NBT's current schedule, the strong state of the company, its enthusiastic and hard working dancers and the status of plans for NBT to move to a purpose built venue at Quarry Hill in
Leeds
.
At the close of the evening, the Chairman presented David Nixon with a cheque, a contribution towards the Queen Anne costume in the second act of the ballet.
